Sustainability Learning Pathways in the UBC Teacher Education Program: Destination Cohort

Abstract

With the recent and dramatic changes to our K-12 curriculum in British Columbia, there is an essential need for pre-service teacher education to lead the transformation of practice in our schools and communities. Education with sustainability as a core foundation is also gaining traction in B.C. and around the world. At the University of British Columbia, we initiated the Sustainability Learning Pathways in Teacher Education Project to explore possible pathways for sustainability to grow in our education system. The project has culminated in a new Education for Sustainability teacher education cohort at UBC that launched in September 2018. In this paper, we share the story, consider the challenges and imagine the possibilities as we work to transform teacher education with sustainability in mind.

Author Biography

Patrick AB Robertson, Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia

Deeply involved in education for the last 20 years, Patrick currently leads an educational consulting firm, Syncollab Strategies (www.syncollab.com), and is a teacher educator in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a Fellow in the UBC Sustainability Initiative. He is currently co-leading the new Education for Sustainability teacher education cohort at UBC. Through his professional pursuits, Patrick builds networks, works to transform educational policy and practice, and has broad and sustained experience in community engagement, professional development and project management with a wide variety of local, provincial and national partners and clients. He is also a director of various community organizations focused on sustainability, social justice, climate, STEAM, literacy and educational transformation, including the Green Learning Canada Foundation (www.greenlearning.ca), Environment and Sustainability Education in Teacher Education (www.eseinfacultiesofed.ca), and the B.C. Classrooms to Communities (C2C) Education Network (www.c2c-bc.org).
